The things I didn't know before moving to London/Ce que j'ignoraisavant de m'installer à Londres.

I have been to London many times as a tourist. My trips in the city never exceeded 2-3 days. Then, I had the opportunity to move here for work and now I am a Londoner. Living here makes me realize that there really is a huge difference between travelling to a place and living there. While I still have a lot to learn about the British culture, there are a few things I noticed while living here that I didn't know before.

1)The public transport/Les transports en commun
In my first article about London last summer, I told you guys that you should get an oyster card. While it is a great option to use public transport, it is really expensive if you use it often. A return trip costs £5... and fares are even more expensive during the rush hour... You just end up topping your card up every five minutes and I'm clearly not too happy about it.

2)Finding a day job/Trouver un job alimentaire
I am comparing with France, but day jobs seem easier to find here in London than Paris for example. Many of my friends found jobs and flats in less than 2 weeks. While finding this jobs seems a bit easier than France, you can also get fired easily. This point and the one above make me realize how liberal the country is. You get paid per week so they don't have to wait for the end of the month to fire you.

3)The food is not that expensive/La nourriture n'est pas méga chère
Rents, public transport are expensive, but grocery shopping is okay (again, I'm comparing with France). Furthermore, there are plenty of restaurants serving healthy foods and I can't wait to try them all.

4)Londoners are active/Les gens sont sportifs
I don't know if it is because I live in a wealthy area or because summer is coming, but Londoners exercise a lot! There are always a bunch of people running or biking. And I love that!

5)The diversity/La diversité
Every borough is unique and has different vibes. People know how to dress and I just feel like there is the Fashion Week all the time. I love the fact that here you can dress like you feel like dressing. I find the people lovely, easy to approach and respectful (for a big city).

6)How cosmopolitan the city is/Londres est très cosmopolite
I feel like there are more foreigners than British people here. Seriously, I hear more French, Spanish and Italian than English on the streets. When I end up meeting a born and raised Londoner, I am like "no way!". I love the fact that I can go to a Jamaican restaurant one day, Hungarian the other day or Italian on the following day. The good part is that every one is a Londoner. It doesn't matter where you come from, there is a piece of London for everyone.

Over to you! Have you ever considered moving somewhere?
