My Garden Route road trip through the South African coast was the most unprepared trip of my life yet, one of the best.
Travelling alone and travelling with your squad is different in so many ways. I have learned from both experiences so I am sharing my tips with you today so you can also have amazing memories to cherish.

Mon road trip sur la Garden Route en Afrique du Sud a été le voyage le moins préparé que j'ai fait jusqu'à présent. C'était un super trip et j'ai retenu plein de leçons que je partage avec vous aujourd'hui. Dans cet article, je vous dis comment organiser un voyage avec vos amis.

1) Find friends you truly trust and know that they can commit/Assurez-vous que vos amis soient vraiment motivés et prêts à s'engager:

There is nothing more disappointing than canceling a trip because at the end no one has the money or the time to travel. So before booking anything, talk with your friends and see who is available and when. Make sure everyone knows exactly when their school year will be over (including resits) and the time frame of those who have a summer job and so on.
Bear in mind that it doesn't have to be a one month trip to be great, even a four day trip can be amazing, believe me. You don't need to go too far either.

Il n'y a rien de plus décevant qu'annuler un voyage parce qu'au final personne n'a le temps ni l'argent. Avant de réserver quoique ce soit, discutez entre vous pour savoir qui est vraiment disponible et quand (dates des partiels, dates des rattrapages, date de début/fin du job d'été etc.). Pas besoin de partir un mois à l'autre bout du monde, une semaine dans le sud peut être tout aussi cool.

2) Discuss the budget/Parlez du budget:
As I said before, it doesn't have to be a one month trip to be amazing. If you guys can only afford a 3 day trip, go for it!
However, money is an important factor here as not everyone has the same budget or is willing to pay the same price for the same thing. Maybe you prefer staying at backpackers because it's cheaper for you and your friends are more into hotels with a private bathroom... Well, you can stay at a backpackers and meet your friends later. During my garden route road trip we didn't all stay at the same backpackers as there were not enough places for everyone And it didn't matter. We were meeting up in the morning for our daily activities and were gathering at each other backpackers for dinner.

Le budget de chacun est important parce que tout le monde n'est pas prêt à payer le même montant pour le même produit/service. Vous préférez peut être aller en auberge alors que vos amis préfèrent l'hôtel... N'hésitez pas à diviser le groupe. Ceux qui veulent aller à l'hôtel peuvent y aller pendant que les autres sont à l'auberge. Tant que vous êtes pas trop loin les uns des autres, ça ne devrait pas poser de problème. Vous pourrez toujours passer vos journées ensemble.

3) Be ready to arg for irrelevant things/préparez vous à vous disputer pour des trucs débiles:
Being with the same people 24/7 can be overwhelming especially if it's the first time you spend a long amount of time with them. There are little arguments that might come up and that's fine. Don't take it too personally. Remember, you are here to enjoy life with your friends. When there is a problem, talk about it, resolve it and move on.

Des tensions peuvent subvenir au sein du groupe et franchement vous prenez pas trop la tête là-dessus. Ne pas être content parce qu'un tel a fait ça ou dit ça est la chose la plus normale au monde. Discutez du problème, réglez-le et continuez à vous amuser.

4) Give others some space/Laissez-vous respirer:
Although you are travelling together, it doesn't mean that you guys have to literally be together 24/7 . Maybe one of your friends needs some time to meditate, listen to some music, work out... Give him some space!
C'est pas parce que vous voyagez ensemble que vous devez être les uns sur les autres. Pas besoin de se coller 24h sur 24. S'il y en a un qui veut aller faire du sport, méditer, ou écouter de la musique, laissez-le tranquille.

5) Discuss the kind of activities that everyone wants to do/Parlez des activités que chacun veut faire:
Communication is key in life. Know what everyone has in mind. Maybe you want to club all night long and your friends are more into sightseeing... Well, don't be upset if the whole group is not into what you want to do. Take the ones who want to go hiking with you while the others are going to the beach for example. Again, you don't have to be all together 24/7. Always meet people half way as long as everyone is happy at the end.

On vous le dira jamais assez mais la communication c'est vraiment la clé. Parlez des centres d'intérêt de chacun. Peut être qu'une partie du groupe a envie de faire la tournée des bars et les autres préfèrent un diner à la maison et faire les musées le lendemain... N'hésitez pas à faire des groupes. Vous vous retrouverez à la fin de vos activités respectives.

6)Make a planning for the chores/Partagez-vous les tâches ménagères de façon claire:
Discussing the chores can be important if you guys rent a flat. Maybe one prefers to clean the dishes instead of going grocery shopping. Make sure everyone voices what he is willing to do.

Savoir qui fait quoi va diminuer les chances de se disputer à propos de petits trucs. Peut-être que vous préférez passer l'aspi au lieu de faire la vaisselle. Faites-le savoir à votre groupe.

7)Don't plan too much/Ne planifiez pas tout:
Planning and expecting too much can be disappointing. Just be open to whatever might happen. That's the beauty of life.

Ne planifiez pas tout. Avoir trop d'attentes peu être décevant. Soyez ouvert aux opportunités et aux autres et ce sera mémorable.

According to every travel guide, the Blue Lagoon is a must to do in Iceland. So, I decided to experience it despite the cost and here are my impressions.

D'après tous les guides sur l'Islande, le Blue Lagoon est un must ! C'est pourquoi j'ai décidé de tenter l'expérience malgré le prix très élevé. Et, voici pour vous le résumé de mon expérience.

First of all, you have to book your ticket in advance if you want to go there, they don't sell entrance tickets on-site.

Tip : If you live in Iceland and have a kennitala (an Icelandic security social number) you can have a discount so don't forget to ask for it !

Tout d'abord, vous devez réserver votre billet d'entrée en avance puisqu'il n'est pas possible de l'acheter sur place.

Petit conseil : Si vous résidez en Islande et avez un kennitala (un numéro de sécurité sociale Islandais), vous pouvez avoir une réduction alors n'oubliez pas de la demander !

The ticket entrance is expensive for sure, but after being there, I promise that it's worth it ! I went for the standard entrance ticket (40€ in winter - 50€ in summer) but you can also choose a package including towels, a drink, a massage, etc. depending on how much you are willing to pay. Visit their website to have all the prices.

Le tarif d'entrée est sans conteste élevé, mais je ne regrette pas d'avoir payé le prix, ça en vaut la peine ! J'ai choisi le tarif standard qui ne donne droit qu'au billet d'entrée (40€ en hiver - 50€ en été) mais vous pouvez aussi opter pour des packs incluant des serviettes, des produits de beauté, un massage, une boisson, etc. selon le prix que vous êtes prêts à payer. Visitez leur site internet pour avoir le détails des tarifs.

To get to the Blue Lagoon, you can either use your car if you have one, or book a bus transfer from Reykajvik or from the airport with Reykjavik Excursions.

Once you get there - somewhere in the middle of nowhere - you will have a queue. Blue lagoon is a very touristic attraction so there are a lot of people, no matter the day or the season.

Pour vous rendre au Blue Lagoon, vous avez deux solutions : soit vous y allez avec votre voiture si vous en avez une, soit vous réservez un bus affrété depuis Reykjavik ou depuis l'aéroport via Reykjavik Excursions.

Une fois arrivé là bas - au beau milieu de nul part - vous allez devoir faire un peu de queue. Le Blue Lagoon est un endroit très touristique et fréquenté quelque soit le jour et la saison.

Then, you will have to get changed and take a shower. The changing rooms are clean and big which is very comfortable. There are private shower rooms if you don't feel comfortable enough to take a shower nacked in front of strangers or in front of your friends (In Iceland, before going to any kind of swimming pool, you have to take a shower without your swim suit).

Ensuite, vous allez vous changer et prendre une douche. Les espaces pour se changer sont très propres et grands, ce qui est plutôt agréable. Et il y a quelques douches privées avec une porte si vous n'êtes pas assez à l'aise pour prendre votre douche nu devant des inconnus ou devant vos amis (En Islande, avant d'aller se baigner, il est toujours obligatoire de prendre une douche sans son maillot).

Finally, you can enter the infamous milky blue water full of silica.

Don't stay near the entrance, it is pretty crowded (as you can see on my picture). You'd better off explore the entire pool. It is massive and there are a lot of corners that are completely empty. Feeling alone while you are floating in that milky hot water is the best way to enjoy your Blue Lagoon experience !

Et enfin, vous pouvez entrer dans l'eau laiteuse si célèbre et que l'on voit sur toutes les photos.

Ne restez pas près du bord (il y a beaucoup de monde comme vous pouvez le voir sur ma photo). Allez plutôt vous aventurer plus loin dans le bassin. Il est très grand et il a de nombreux endroits qui sont vides. Etre loin de la foule et se sentir seul au monde en flottant dans l'eau chaude et laiteuse, c'est le meilleur moyen de profiter du Blue Lagoon !

You can apply a silica mask as the geothermal area from where the water comes is full of silica. You will find many trays full of silica around the pool, you just have to grab some and apply it on your skin. I was unsure of the benefits of this facial mask but my skin was pretty smooth afterwards. I renewed the experience twice to be sure that I wasn't tripping.

During that relaxing day, you can also enjoy the bar that is situated in the middle of the pool, a sauna and a water jet that is perfect if you don't have enough money for a massage.

Vous pouvez vous appliquer un masque de silice grâce aux nombreux bacs plein de cette matière gluante aux différents rebords du bassin. Je n'étais pas persuadée que les effets présumés de ce masque étaient vrais, je n'avais donc pas de grandes attentes en l'appliquant mais en rinçant mon visage, ma peau était toute douce. J'étais tellement étonnée que je me suis fait un deuxième masque, juste pour être sûre que je n'étais pas en train de fantasmer les effets.

Enfin, pour profiter pleinement de l'expérience, vous pouvez également prendre un verre au bar qui situe en plein milieu du bassin, aller dans le sauna, ou vous faire masser par les puissants jets d'eau (à défaut d'avoir les moyens de se payer un vrai massage).

Last but not least, after your experience at the Blue Lagoon, I advise you to explore the surrondings areas. It is right in the middle of a lava field and the landscape is breathtaking !

Pour finir cette journée en beauté, je vous conseille d'explorer un peu les alentours en sortant du Blue Lagoon. Vous vous trouverez en plein champ de lave et les paysages sont impressionnants !

Perhaps what deliberately cross your thoughts were the people that have the humongous urge to be independent of Spain, or conceivably their authentic white sausages served upon infamous Catalonian wines (stereotypes you say?!). It's quite essential to be aware of this particular direction if you want to visit and to know more in-depth of Barcelona or other Catalonia territories.

Vous vous demandez sans doute qui sont les catalans? Vous avez sans doute en tête des indépendantistes, de la saucisse blanche et du vin catalan (vive les clichés!). Mais la culture catalane est bien plus complexe que ça, c'est pourquoi j'ai eu l'idée de rédiger cet article pour partager avec vous ce que je sais sur la culture catalane.

I had several issues of understanding the differences between the Spanish and Catalan people when I arrived in Barcelona. I thought that I should share my knowledge and experiences about them to my fellow traveler readers.

History of Catalonia / L'histoire de la Catalogne

I'll try to sum up what I know but I'm not a historian or anything. I'm sure you can get additional information online or at your nearest library.

"With a distinguished history stretching back to the early middle ages, many Catalans think of themselves as a separate nation from the rest of Spain" (BBC,2015)

The County of Barcelona was the big player of the Mediterranean sea back then and on that very time, there was also the Kingdom of Aragon that clenched The County of Barcelona underneath their power. Unfortunately, since the marriage of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile, Catalonia had to bow down to their arch enemy which is Spain itself. Until the 19th century, Catalonia was on fire for the thirst for independence and separation from Spain. A spark of the separatist movement was unavoidable in that time. In addition, Catalonia also suppressed by the infamous dictator Francisco Franco during the Spanish civil war, 36 years of suppression that eradicates autonomous and special right to the Catalonia region. During this time, Catalan nationalism repressed in such a cruel way and even the usage of Catalonian language was restricted.

Le Comté de Barcelone a eu une place prédominante dans la région méditerranéenne. Le Royaume D'Aragon a fini par s'unir avec le comté de Barcelone. Le marigae du Roi Ferdinand d'Aragon avec la Reine Isabella de Castile a incité les deux territoires à s'unir et à créer l'Espagne que nous connaissons aujourd'hui. Jusqu'au 19e siècle, la Catalogne souhaitait son indépendance.
Plus tard, la Catalogne a été oppressé par Franco et parler catalan était interdit.

Culture

My Airbnb host who was originally from Salamanca moved to Barcelona 7 years ago. She told me that she had authentic Catalan experiences ever since.

Mon hôte Airbnb qui vient de Salamanque a emmenagé à Barcelone il y a plusieurs années. Elle m'a raconté qu'elle a pu vivre des experiences Catalane vraiment authentiques.

Castellers

Catalonian people do relish regarding the celebration of Castellers or in another word 'the human castle/human tower', a mind-boggling artwork of human teamwork put together in a form of people climbing over other people to make a stunning human skyscraper.

Le "Castellers" ou "Le château humain / La tour humaine" est un évènement qui réjouit les Catalans. Ils créent alors une incroyable œuvre d'art éphémère en escaladant les uns sur les autres afin de former une tour humaine.

La Sardana

If Spanish people can dance the hell out from Flamenco, Catalonian people have their Sardana moves. In such particular reason, this is a traditional dance of Catalonia said to have links with Catalan nationalism (Mataromagrada.cat,2014)

Food
Let's talk about food, shall we? The utmost crucial topic for our belly and appetite especially during the period of traveling to Catalonian regions. Tapas and paella may hold the highlight of foodgasms in the whole of Spain. However, you must try the authentic pan amb tomato, calcots, escudella, fideua and my favorite choice; the delicious botifarra.

Parlons bien, parlons nourriture ! C'est tout de même un sujet crucial pour nos estomacs, surtout lorsqu'on voyage en Catalogne. Les Tapas et la Paella sont toujours au cœur de l'attention quand on parle de spécialités Espagnoles, mais je vous conseille fortement de gouter les

People

First of all, there are no physical differences between Catalonian and Spanish people. Second, do not judge the Catalans by their groundbreaking protests these days to the Spanish government. I spoke to several Catalonian people and I found a diverse opinion about the movement of the independence. However, there are also some people who are quite sensitive to this issue, I observed considerable couchsurfers account in Barcelona and some of them really support this kind of independence movement.

Nonetheless, Catalonian people are open-minded, friendly and fun, but a bit more structured (no don't worry they don't carry around agendas like the Dutch people).

Déjà, vous pouvez noter qu'il n'y a pas de différences physiques entre les Espagnols et les Catalans. Ensuite, ne jugez pas la totalité des Catalans sur la seule base des protestations du mouvement pour l'indépendance de la Catalogne contre le gouvernement Espagnol. J'ai discuté avec plusieurs Catalans et ils ont tous une opinion différente concernant ce mouvement. Néanmoins, certains sont très sensible à ce sujet et supportent avec ferveur le mouvement pour indépendance de la Catalogne.

Enfin, tout cela n'empêche pas les Catalans d'être ouvert d'esprit, amicaux et plein de joie de vivre ! Ils sont également parfois un peu strict (mais ne vous inquiétez pas, ils ne sont pas obsédés par les agendas comme les Hollandais !)

J'ai honte de me l'avouer, mais j'ai plus voyagé en dehors de la France que dans l'hexagone. Je me suis donc dit que j'allais remédier à ça et partir à la découverte des meilleures villes étudiantes avec Isilines vu qu'ils proposent des voyages en car en France à petits prix.

J'ai entendu tellement de bien de Rennes que j'ai voulu visiter la ville en premier et je n'ai pas été déçue.

I heard so many good things about Rennes that it made perfect sense for me to visit it first.

1.Mes impressions/My thoughts
Rennes est une ville très agréable à visiter et très belle! La ville est à la fois jeune, moderne et a du cachet! J'ai trouvé les gens vraiment agréable et amoureux de leur ville! Tout est très bien indiqué aucune chance de se perdre donc. On peut apercevoir les influences bretonnes de la ville: les crêperies un peu partout, les noms des rues traduits en breton, l'architecture médiévale...

Rennes is an amazing student city. The city is absolutely lovely and so are its inhabitants!
If you are a fan of crêpes and stunning architecture, you will be in heaven.

2.Que faire/Things to do
La ville a une architecture magnifique à la fois moderne et médiévale. Baladez-vous dans le centre et visitez le parlement, l'Opera de Rennes, la Cathédrale Saint Pierre...
Si vous assistez à un match de foot au stade Roazhon Park, mangez des galettes saucisses avant et après le match!

Rennes has a stunning architecture! Walk around and find your way to the Opera, the Cathedral, The Parliament...
If you are there to attend a football game, eat a "galette saucisse" before and after the game.

3.Que manger/What to eat
Vous ne pouvez pas partir de Rennes sans avoir goûté aux crêpes bretonnes, à la galette saucisse, au Kouign Amann et au Chouchen. Si vous avez envie de manger des plats internationaux, la rue de St Malo regorge de restos exotiques.

Pour les meilleures crêpes bretonnes/best places to eat local:
- Crêperie des portes Mordelaises
6, rue des Portes Mordelaises
- La Rozell 14, Rue de Penhoët.

You can't leave Rennes without eating crêpes, galettes saucisses, Kouign Amann and Chouchens. If you are more into exotic dishes, you can go to Saint Malo Street.

4.Où boire/Where to drink
Etant une ville étudiante, vous verrez que la ville est très dynamique et que les gens font beaucoup la fête!

Because it is a student city, you will see that the city is lively and people love to party.

St Georges Cafe, Rennes

Vous pouvez aller boire un verre à la rue de la Soif (rue Saint Michel). Je vous conseille Le Kenland situé place des Lices si vous aimez les évènements sportifs, et le Saint Georges qui se trouve au 37 rue Saint Georges pour un décor atypique. Si vous êtes à la recherche d'une ambiance internationale, rendez-vous au Fox au 13 rue de la Monnaie. Si vous voulez une ambiance encore différente, vous pouvez vous rendre au Funky Monkey au 37 rue Saint Melaine.

There are plenty of bars on Saint Michel Street. Try the Kenland cafe is you are into sports events, St Georges if you fancy an atypical and original spot. If you are into the Erasmus life and are sick of speaking French, head to the Fox Cafe.

Founded as a Roman city, Barcelona flourishes with magnificent history in every corner. If you've ever been to Rome, Naples or Nice, you will see that the city of Barcelona possesses the same features such as narrow streets, hilly terrain, leftovers from the Romans and beautiful buildings.

However, Barcelona is utterly different from other European mediterranean cities. I'll share with you the best things to do within the city.

First of all, Barcelona is not a huge city so don't take a day pass and take the 10journey pass instead. It can last forever if you walk as much as I did! Prices for backpackers are dirt cheap especially during the low season.

Barcelone c'est la ville que tout le monde aime et pour cause: des monuments splendides, l'Art Nouveau, des parcs plein de surprises, la mer, le soleil...
Je me suis fait une petite escapade à Barcelone avec Eunice et je partage avec vous les immanquables de la ville.

La ville n'est pas très grande et se visite très bien à pied! Je vous recommande le pass de 10 voyages au lieu du pass journée puisque la ville se visite très bien à pied! Les auberges ne sont pas chères du tout (surtout en basse saison).

10. Hospital de Sant Pau

When you heard the word "hospital" you probably didn't think it would be the perfect place for sightseeing. This place is a fine case of gothic architecture merged with public services building. The hospital crowned as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
You can even visit the inside of the building as well. They have magnificent garden along side with exquisite sculptures, glasses and mozaic.

Ce monument est représentatif de la beauté de Barcelone et a été classé au Patrimoine Mondial de l'UNESCO. Vous pouvez visiter l'intérieur du bâtiment ainsi que son jardin magnifique rempli de sculptures et de mosaïques.

9. Parc de la Ciutadella

I would say that this is one of the most charming city parks in Barcelona. The park has stunning art and building features in every edge of it.
If you have a date or plan to have a relaxing walk, this park is the best choice to do those kind of activities. I would recommend visiting this area around spring or maybe autumn for unique colors.

Selon moi, c'est un des plus beaux parcs de Barcelone. Si vous avez envie d'une jolie balade, rendez-vous dans ce parc. Je vous conseille d'y aller au printemps et en automne pour des couleurs de folie.

8. Barceloneta Beach
What would be Barcelona without its beach?!The beach equipped with public shower, toilet, free wifi and surrounded with appetizing restaurants. Moreover, if you are in the mood for a crazy nightlife experience, the beach also has stunning bars and clubs.

Que serait Barcelone sans sa plage? Vous y trouverez des restaurants tout autour ainsi que des boîtes de nuit branchées (si c'est votre truc...).

7. Gothic Quarter

Although it is one of the oldest sections in the city, the Gothic Quarter thrives with its historical background and amazing small-narrow streets that made most of the tourists gazed upon its unusual cityscape.
There are also enchanting restaurants worth to visit around that area such as;

Le quartier gothique vous offre de petites ruelles, avec des restaurants, des bars plus cool les uns que les autres! Si vous avez faim, testez ces restos:

1. El Nou Antigo, restaurant with classic gothic exterior and interior
2. Restaurant El Beso y La Lluna, if you fancy some amazing Spanish food
3. La Vinateria, for those who like tapas and wine

The second day of my stay in the Barcelona, Eunice took me to this magnificent place as she has been there before and thought that I shouldn't miss this place. Oh boy, was she right!
If you like arts and history, you probably should give a visit to the one thousand years of art Museum a.k.a Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.

Amazingly, this place is also connected with other landmarks such as the olympic stadium (Estadi de Olimpic de Montjuic) and Castell de Montjuic. You can reach these places from the National Museum simply by foot, bus and bicycle.

Le deuxième jour, Eunice m'a emmené sur le balcon du Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya car ça a été son coup de coeur pendant sa première visite à Barcelone. Vu la vue qu'on a, je comprends pourquoi! A partir de ce musée, vous pouvez vous rendre au stade olympique (la visite est gratuite quand il n'y a pas de match/ concert). Vous pouvez aussi vous rendre au Castell de Montjuic.

5. Park Güell
This is certainly one of the most famous Gaudi's legacy within the city of Barcelona. Over a hundred years ago this park was a part of Güell assignment for Gaudi to construct an estate for well-off families in the hilly part of the city (back then this area was not a big part of the city).

4. Tibidabo

Location: Mirablau Restaurant

It took me around 25 to 30 minutes to reach this marvelous place via metro and train from the city heart. It was absolutely worth it! You can have an awesome view of the city from here.
Furthermore, if you like amusement parks or even hiking, you probably would like to try to visit Tibidabo Amusement Park.

3. Arc de Triomf
No, this landmark is not from Paris but Barcelona does have its own version of the Arc de Triomphe (just like many European cities actually). It was built as a main gate for the Barcelona world fair in 1888 by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas. The location is positively fascinating to feast your eyes. If you walk down all the way to the long boulevard ahead of the Arc to the direction of Parc de la Ciutadella.

2. Casa Batlló
There are a lot of Gaudi's ornament leftovers around the nook and corner in the city of Barcelona but this one is a must visit place for sure. Located in the infamous area of Passeig de Gracia, the building stands still, charming all of the people passing...

Sagrada Familia is one of the craziest, charming and stunning architectural designs made by Gaudi. Even though the church is still in a pace of construction for more than a hundred years ago now, yet the magnetize details of the building can make you stare at it for quite a while.

On me dit dans l'oreillette que les travaux seront bientôt finis (ca fait plus de 100ans qu'il y a des grues partout après tout!)
